There's a reason why leading organizations invest in wellness for their employees. Companies like Google, Facebook, Shopify, and others realize that a healthy employee is a happy employee… and a happy employee is a productive employee!
According to Brown University, adults who are in better health may also be able to work longer and achieve higher incomes over their lifetimes.
This goes back to why we started Desk Nibbles and why we think employers should care about the health of their employees. Our mission is to bring happiness and healthiness to offices around the world.

Emil (picture above), my brother, Co-Founder and our CTO worked at Shopify as a Developer. He witnessed first-hand how much of an impact healthy and delicious foods, snacks, and beverages can have on an organization. Then he realized how difficult it is for most organizations to replicate this and thought “Why can’t every company have an office kitchen like Shopify or Google?”. Emil, being the tech nerd he is, went one step further and created smart applications using AI to give employers and employees an incredible experience. For example he created a Slack chatbot customers can use to make sure every employee has an outlet to give feedback and voice their dietary restrictions.

1.5 years later we are humbled to see that more organizations are joining the fight to improve wellness in the office. It appears that 81% of our customers or ‘Desk Nibblers’, have never had snacks in their office before and were looking for a solution to bring happiness to the employees in their office. Not only this, but many of our Desk Nibblers are not the expected tech company but include organizations in manufacturing, services, and other non-tech fields.
So what do employees think about healthy foods at work?
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) conducted a poll in 2010 that found the vast majority of employees want healthy food options at work.
So yeah... employees also care about having healthy foods at work. Who wouldn't!
According to phrases.org.uk the old adage "You are what you eat" stems from Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, a French polititian and lawyer who wrote "Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es." [Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are]. This was included in his gastronomic essay in 1826. Several years later a similar phrase was penned by the German Philosopher, Ludwig Feuerbach, "Der Mensch ist, was er ißt." That translates into English as 'man is what he eats'.
Neither Brillat-Savarin or Feuerbach meant their quotations to be taken literally but they were certainly on to something...
Here are some examples of great snacks and beverages to help energize your day:
1. Almonds - contain lots of healthy fats, fiber, protein, magnesium and vitamin E.
2. Fruit and dried fruit – contain large amounts of important nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, minerals and various antioxidants and phytonutrients. Bananas, berries, apples, grapes, and citrus are all great options
3. Water – According to one study by the journal Sports Medicine dehydration can lead to poor planning skills.
4. Low sugar protein bars – convenient and delicious. Great options include RXBar, Kind, and Clif Bar & Company.
